California Northern 502, a 3GS21B Genset, is parked on a side track in Willows. 502 is one of five National Railway Equipment-built Gensets owned by the shortline. These units are powered by several smaller engines (the name "GenSet" is a contraction of Generator Set). The basic idea behind this design is that one or more of the three engines can be shut off at any time to conserve fuel and cut down on maintenance costs. This is beneficial for railroads like the California Northern, which operates on over 100 miles of ex-Southern Pacifics West Side Line. This line has very few grades, and so the Gensets can operate on minimum power when running light or with short strings of cars. |
