#800045 CARITAS & #800069 CIMARRON RIVER
Title:  #800045 CARITAS & #800069 CIMARRON RIVER
Description:  Both of these cars were built in 1948 by P-S in Lot #6769 to Plan #4153 as SLSF 14RM-4DB sleepers #1450 PIERRE LACLEDE and #1466 CIMARRON RIVER, 2 of 24 such sleepers built in that Lot, which was ordered in August 1945; cars were delivered between January and June 1948. SLSF owned 17 (#1450-#1466) and MKT owned 7 (#1500-#1506). The Katy cars and 7 of the Frisco cars (#1450-#1456) were built for the TEXAS SPECIAL; the other 10 Frisco cars were built for the METEOR with RIVER-series names. In 1965, Frisco sold 12 of their cars to CN as #2095-#2106 with FALLS-series names; PIERRE LACLEDE as #2095 CHURCHILL FALLS and CIMARRON RIVER as #2105 RAINBOW FALLS. The CHURCHILL FALLS was sold by VIA in 1983 to High Iron Travel, which reconfigured the car to 4DB-1SR sleeper buffet lounge observation CARITAS, and the car is now owned by Iowa Pacific as SLRG #1. The white, light gray, maroon & orange paint scheme seen here is the second variation of three of the CARITAS unique Art Deco paint scheme, the car is now painted in IC Chocolate & Orange. The RAINBOW FALLS was sold by VIA in 1983 to Andy and Tony Marchiando-Meteor Rail Incorporated, who returned the car to METEOR colors and the name CIMARRON RIVER. Description:  The High Iron Rail Excursions "Southern Explorer" is blasting its way south along the UP Chester Sub, south of Dupo, on its way to its final destination--Paducah, KY very early in the morning. The train is being led by AMTK 184 and AMTK 19. AMTK 184 is one of the Amtrak 40th Anniversary Series locomotives, bearing the Phase IV paint scheme. The passenger cars are: ex-Union Pacific "Pacific Union," ex-Frisco "Cimarron River," ex-New York Central "Swift Stream," and ex-Frisco "Caritas." The colorful consist here reminds me of the so-called "rainbow era" that I remember from the early 1970's when Amtrak was in its infancy.

Description:  Private car on Bennett Levin's restored PRR passenger train at Pittsburgh's Penn Station. Built in 1948 by the Pullman Company. A placard in a window reads "The Caritas started life as the Pierre LeClede on the Frisco Railroad as 14-roomette, 4-bedroom sleeper. It operated on the Texas special and other famous Frisco trains. It was sold to the CN in 1965 to become the Churchill Falls. where it was used in transcontinental service on the CN and VIA. Retired in 1981, it was purchased by High Iron Travel in 1983 to be transformed into an Art Deco business car. An open platform, kitchen, master room (with its own shower), lounge and dining area were added and the car was completely modernized electrically and mechanically. Description:  Early on the morning of April 28, 2012, the High Iron Rail Excursions "Southern Explorer" departed St. Louis on a 2000-plus mile journey that would take it through 5 states. Here we see the train as it crosses the Meramec River in Valley Park, MO on the BNSF Cuba Sub. The rearmost car we see here is "Caritas," which was built in 1948 by the Pullman Company for the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad(Frisco). The car has been used on such famous passenger trains as the Frisco/MKT "Texas Special."
